What: When you were young, did you know how to study for a test or make college plans? Do you remember wanting your first car or looking for a part-time job? Simple things that may seem straightforward to you now may be a complete mystery to a young person.
1 in 3 young people will grow up without having a mentor leaving them disconnected from a critical resource to help with these very things.
Mentoring is to help mentees tap into the knowledge of those with more experience than themselves and learn faster than they would on their own. At its core, mentors put a hand up for others to assure them that they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges. You’ll inspire and empower the next generation to explore possibilities and evolve their dreams!
Mentoring provides meaningful connections that impact the people involved and influence their lives at home, at work, and in their communities. But sometimes, it can be challenging to know where to start or what questions to ask! Through this workshop, we are looking at the incredible organizations that are connecting others worldwide, understanding the scenarios of the people they serve, and preparing to become mentors. We will role-play scenarios and questions to prepare you for what it is like to be a mentor before providing all the details on your next steps on how to continue supporting others!
What: In collaboration with Employee Resource Group Ability, we are excited to welcome The Arc for an educational session and volunteer activity to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Attendees will learn about the importance of promoting and protecting the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and ways we can each advocate for their inclusion and participation in the community and workforce.
